What are transit bolts, why are they there and what should I do with them?
When you buy a new front loading washing machine, its drum will be held in place by four transit bolts. These are put in place by the manufacturer to keep the drum from moving during transport from the warehouse – if the drum was left unsecured, bumps during delivery could damage your machine.
When you set up your new washer, remember to remove the transit bolts from the rear of your appliance before you start it up. If you don’t, the bolts will interfere with your washing machine’s action, causing a lot of noise, vibration, and eventually damage to your machine.
Removing transit bolts is usually quite simple. Just use a spanner to unscrew the bolts, and remove them from the washer. Many washers come with covers or stoppers included for plugging the bolt holes back up again. Check your manual to see if your model has any special instructions for safely removing its transit bolts.
Once your machine’s transit bolts have been removed, don’t throw them away. It’s worth saving them in a safe place in case you ever need to move the machine again, such as if you move house.
All you need to do is return the bolts to their former positions to secure the drum in place, so the appliance can be moved without the risk of damage.
