There are many things you can achieve in VLC by running it through the Windows 10 command line. This unlocks important features that you cannot find in VLC’s graphical user interface (GUI).
This guide will demonstrate how to run VLC from Command Prompt on Windows 10.
Make VLC work from Windows 10 Prompt Command
Open Command Prompt as admin from the Start menu.
To make VLC work from Windows 10’s Command Prompt, you need to know its exact location on your Windows PC. You will usually find the path in Program Files , which can be copied from a right click on Properties.
Next, enter the following code to change the directory to the VLC folder path. Make sure copy-paste is enabled in the Command Prompt, otherwise you will need to enter the entire folder path.
cd C:Program FilesVideoLANVLC
Enter the following code to fetch the complete list of VLC commands applicable to Windows 10 users.
The above command will save a file notepad, vlc-help , in the VLC folder.
Open VLC in headless mode (no interface)
When you open the notepad file, you’ll be able to see a very long list of useful VLC commands. It ranges from video playback options to screen recording, saving video wallpapers, managing hotkeys, adding plugins, bookmarks, etc.
The first option to stream a file on Windows 10 is based on its file path in the command line selected here. This will play VLC video in headless mode without the need for a GUI. The syntax is as shown.
Go to the target video you want to play in headless mode. Copy its path from a right click on Properties.
Copy and paste the entire path according to the syntax noted above in the VLC help menu and press
Enter . You can first use the
CLS to clear the entire screen.
Videos will now be automatically played in headless mode without the VLC widget taking up extra space on the screen.
Running headless from the command line is the best way to play VLC video in full screen without any interference of text or graphics.
Play YouTube videos on VLC in full screen mode
You can use the extra headless ability to play YouTube videos (or any other online video) directly from VLC. To do this, go to the online video and copy its URL, then paste it as shown below.
The YouTube video will now start playing on the VLC app, but you don’t want the extension to interfere with the viewing experience. So we will use another command mentioned in the previous VLC help notepad file to get rid of this distraction.
Refer to the following code to convert any YouTube VLC video to full screen mode.
vlc https://online-video-url --fullscreen
YouTube videos will now be viewable on VLC without annoying VLC ads, interruptions or widgets.
Headless mode in VLC can be turned on and off arbitrarily. You can also hide the mouse pointer and full-screen controls. With efficient playback controls, you’re responsible for your VLC experience. You can also convert the audio file with VLC or even use it as a video editor.
