How to install / uninstall Microsoft WordPad in Windows 10

Microsoft WordPad is a basic rich text editor that was first introduced to Microsoft Windows 95 and has continued to appear in all subsequent versions of Windows ever since. It’s more advanced than Microsoft Notepad, but simpler than Microsoft Word.

Starting with Windows 10 build 18980, Microsoft has converted WordPad into an optional feature, giving users the option to uninstall or reinstall to save disk space if needed.

This guide will show you how to install or uninstall the classic WordPad (write.exe) app for all users in Windows 10.

Install or uninstall Microsoft WordPad in Optional Features

1. Open Settings and click the Apps icon .

2. Click on Apps & features on the left side and click on the Optional features link on the right side.

Click on Apps & features on the left side

3. Do step 4 (install) or step 5 (uninstall) below for what you want to do.

4. To install Microsoft WordPad:

A) Click Add a feature .

Click Add a feature

B) Scroll down, select WordPad , click Install and go to step 6 below.

Click Install

5. Uninstall Microsoft WordPad:

Scroll down, click on WordPad in Installed features , tap on the Uninstall button and go to step 6 below.

Click WordPad in the Installed features, then choose Uninstall

6. Now, you can close Settings if you want.

Install / uninstall Microsoft WordPad in Command Prompt

Note : You must be logged in as admin to perform this option.

1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.

2. Do step 3 (install) or step 4 (uninstall) below, depending on what you want to do.

3. To install Microsoft WordPad, copy and paste the command below into the Command Prompt, press Enter, and go to step 5 below.

DISM /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Microsoft.Windows.WordPad~~~~0.0.1.0

4. To uninstall Microsoft WordPad, copy and paste below command into Command Prompt, press Enter and go to step 5 below.

DISM /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Microsoft.Windows.WordPad~~~~0.0.1.0

5. Now, you can close the Command Prompt if you want.
