Wake-on-LAN (WOL) is a feature that starts up a remote computer. Wake-on-LAN allows a computer to “listen” to a “magic packet” containing the MAC address to wake up the computer over LAN or the Internet. This article will guide you to turn on Wake-on-LAN (WOL) in Windows 10 to start your computer remotely.

Enable Wake-on-LAN in motherboard BIOS or UEFI

The specific instructions and settings in this option will vary depending on the motherboard brand and the model number. Please read PC or motherboard manual for more specific details on this.

1. Boot into BIOS or UEFI. Reference: Instructions to enter the BIOS on different computer models for details.

During boot, an on-screen prompt will usually tell you which particular key to press (e.g. Esc , Delete, or F1 ) when booting to enter BIOS or Setup.

2. Enable or disable the Power On By PCI-E or WOL (Wake-on-LAN) power management setting .

Power On By PCI-E settings are located in the Advanced> Advanced APM Configuration tab for ASUS ROG Z390 motherboards.

This setting can be in the Power or Power Management tab for other motherboards.

3. When done, exit and save changes.

4. You will also need to do option 2 or 3 below to enable Wake-on-LAN (WOL) in Windows 10.

1. Do option 1 first if Wake-on-LAN (WOL) is not enabled or disabled in BIOS or UEFI.

2. If Wake-on-LAN (WOL) is enabled, you will need to disable Fast Startup.

3. Open Device Manager ( devmgmt.msc ).

4. Expand the open Network adapters in Device Manager and double-click on the network adapter (eg “Marvell AQC111C 5GbE connection”) that you want to enable or disable WOL to open its properties sheet.

5. Click the Advanced tab in the properties dialog box, choose Wake on Magic Packet under Property on the left, and choose Disabled or Enabled in the Value drop-down menu, whichever you want.

6. Click the Power Management tab in the properties dialog box, perform the following steps to enable or disable WOL, and click OK.

To enable Wake-on-LAN (WOL) for this network adapter:

A) Select Allow this device to wake the computer .

B) Check or uncheck Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer depending on what you want.

To disable Wake-on-LAN (WOL) for this network adapter:

A) Uncheck Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer .

B) Uncheck Allow this device to wake the computer .

7. Now you can close Device Manager if you want.

6. In the Networking tab in the properties dialog box, click the Configure button at the top for the network adapter.

7. Click the Advanced tab in the properties dialog box, choose Wake on Magic Packet under Property on the left, and choose Disabled or Enabled in the Value drop-down menu, depending on what you want.

8. Click the Power Management tab in the properties dialog box, perform the following steps to enable or disable WOL, and click OK.

A) Select Allow this device to wake the computer .

B) Check or uncheck Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer , depending on what you want.
