How to set up File History on Windows 10
To get started with File History in the latest version of Windows 10, follow these steps:
1. Open the Settings app and go to Update & Security> Backup .
2. Click + next to Add a drive .
3. Select your primary hard drive or external hard drive.
Once selected, File History will begin to store data. If you want to turn it off, use a switch that will appear under Automatically back up my files on the same page.
Under Automatically back up my files , click More options, and now you can configure Backup options. You can use the drop-down menus to change the frequency of backups.
Backup custom folders with File History
By default, Windows 10’s File History is configured to save the default data folders in the user’s % UserProfile% folder at C: users [user]. Windows lets you add folders of your choice and starts saving content in folders.
If you want to add a custom folder, even a folder from a drive other than C:, you can add it with these steps:
1. In Settings> Update & Security> Backup , click More options .
2. Click Add a folder under Back up these folder .
3. Clicking Add a folder displays a Select Folder screen that can be used to select the folder you want to backup.

Recover files or folders using File History
When backing up files using File History, Windows 10 stores different versions of files as they are backed up.
Even if a file is lost, corrupted or deleted, this allows you to recover files you need from a specific backup date.
To recover files using File History, you should follow these steps:
1. Open File Explorer and navigate to the folder with the file you want to recover.
At the top of the File Explorer screen, below the Home tab, is a button named History as shown below.
2. Click the History button and the File History screen will be displayed, showing the latest backup of this folder.
If you have backed up this folder for multiple days, then you will be able to switch to different dates to find the specific file you want to restore.
3. To view the contents of the file before recovery, you can right-click on the file and choose Preview.
4. When you have found the file you want to restore, select it by left-clicking the file once and then clicking the green restore button.
5. When you have restored the files, you can close the File History and File Explorer windows.
Note that you can also restore entire folders at once, by navigating to the directory above and then selecting and restoring folders instead of files.
