  • 3. Update the monitor driver
  • 4. Reinstall the monitor driver
  • 5. Run the power troubleshooter
  • 6. Adjust brightness from Power Options
  • 7. Activate the default monitor driver
  • 8. Delete hidden devices in PnP Monitors
  • 9. Fix ATI error through Registry Editor

1. Update Windows 10

The first thing you should do is to check for new Windows 10 updates. If the brightness slider does not work due to a known issue with the operating system, especially after updating key features, Microsoft should take care of it immediately.

Type windows update in the Start menu and then press Enter to check for Windows 10 updates. If so, install them and restart the computer.

2. Reboot the monitor adapter

Sometimes the monitor adapter on the computer can cause problems and prevent the brightness slider from working properly. Disabling it and then re-enabling the display adapter on the computer should fix the problem.

Step 1 . Open Device Manager by clicking the Start icon and then selecting Device Manager .

Step 2. Expand Display Adapters in Device Manager, then right-click on the display adapter and then select Disable Device .

Step 3. On the confirmation dialog box that appears, click Yes . Your screen may turn off but will turn on again after a few seconds.

Step 4. Open the monitor adapter again, right-click on it and select Enable Device to re-enable it.

If there are other adapters (dedicated or built-in) please repeat the process for it in the Display Adapters section.

3. Update the monitor driver

Old monitor drivers can be the cause of not being able to correct screen brightness. Although Windows 10 usually installs the appropriate driver for the display adapter, you should also double-check.

Step 1. Open Device Manager, expand the Display Adapters option, and then right-click on the display adapter. On the context menu that appears, select Update Driver .

Step 2. Windows will ask if you want to search for online drivers or if you want to update drivers from your computer. Your task is to choose the option to search for drivers online.

After making the selection, Windows will automatically search for online drivers, download and install the driver on your computer.

After the installation is finished you will receive a message asking you to restart your computer. After your computer has finished booting up, the error of not adjusting screen brightness will disappear.

If the error still does not fix, follow the steps below:

Step 1 . Right-click the Start button in the bottom left corner of the screen, and select Device Manager to open the Device Manager window.

Step 2 . On the Device Manager window, scroll down to find and expand the Display Adapters option .

Step 3 . Right-click the driver installed on your computer, then click “Update driver software” on the menu that appears.

Step 4. When Windows asks you to choose the option to search for online drivers or to update drivers from your computer, select the option “Browse my computer for driver software”.

Step 5 . On the next window, select the option “Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer”.

Step 6. Check the option “Show compatible hardware” , then select ” Microsoft basic display adapter ” from the menu and click Next .

Windows 10 will now start using the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter instead of the display driver specific to the adapter. However, using this driver will limit the functionality associated with your monitor adapter. You will probably experience performance issues and possibly not switch to a higher resolution. If the brightness slider is working properly it means that the problem is with other screen drivers. So you need to update or reinstall them properly.

4. Reinstall the monitor driver

If the above doesn’t fix the problem, you will need to reinstall the drivers for the display adapter.

Step 1 . Open Device Manager, expand Display Adapters, right-click the display adapter, and then select Uninstall Device .

Step 2 . Restart the computer. Windows 10 will automatically reinstall the driver during the reboot.

If not, go back to Device Manager, click the Action tab on the menu bar, then click Scan for Hardware Changes to force Windows 10 to reinstall the driver.

5. Run the power troubleshooter

Incorrectly configured power settings can be the reason why the brightness slider is not working properly. To check, use Windows 10 troubleshoot manager.

Type troubleshoot settings in the Start menu. Click Open and then scroll down in the Troubleshoot Settings window until Power is found, click on it and then select Run the Troubleshooter .

Follow the on-screen instructions and you will see the power management settings related issues at the end.

6. Adjust brightness from Power Options

If you are unable to change your brightness, you are most likely getting a Windows 10 error. This error can be resolved by adjusting the Power settings.

This method works on laptops but can also be used on Windows 7 and Windows 8.

B1: Navigate to Power Options :

Search Control Panel in the search bar and open the results at the top.

Change the view to Category , then click Hardware and Sound .

Click on Power Options.

On a laptop, you can right-click the Power icon on the taskbar, then select Power Options.

B2: Click the Change plan settings link next to the power plan you have selected.

Click the Change plan settings link

B3: Instead of changing anything, click the link Change advanced power settings . You can find this near the bottom of the window.

B4: Scroll down until you see Display. Expand it by clicking on the gear icon.

B5: Click the icon next to all the following options to expand them:

  • Display brightness
  • Dimmed display brightness
  • Enable adaptive brightness

B6: Make the changes then press the Apply button . You can close this window by clicking OK.

B7: Reboot the computer or laptop.

7. Activate the default monitor driver

Occasionally, some third party programs may install replacement drivers for the home screen device. This may result in a conflict with Windows 10 key functions like the brightness slider. So going back to the default driver can fix this problem.

To check, go to Device Manager, expand Monitors , right-click Generic PnP Monitor , and click Enable Device in the context menu.

Then exit Device Manager and restart the computer. Check if the brightness is adjusted.

8. Delete hidden devices in PnP Monitors

Similar to the method above, this method works only for PnP Monitors. If you’re using one of those options, follow the steps below to be able to fix the brightness issue:

B1: Press and hold the Windows key, then press R. This will launch the Run application .

B2: Type devmgmt.msc and click OK to open Device Manager.

B3: From the Device Manager menu, click View , then select Show hidden devices . If you have this feature enabled, continue to let it be enabled.

Select Show hidden devices

B4: Expand Monitors by clicking on the arrow icon.

B5: Right click on every hidden device and select Uninstall device. (Hidden devices look more blurred than normal ones).

B6: Reboot your computer and try adjusting the brightness again.

9. Fix ATI error through Registry Editor

Some ATI graphics card users have reported that Catalyst has a bug that prevents it from being able to control the brightness of the screen.

Catalyst version 15.7.1 is the most reported for this bug. However, that doesn’t mean this error can’t appear on other versions.

If you are an ATI user and also have Catalyst installed, the following method might help if you can’t adjust your brightness:

B1: Press and hold Windows key + R. This will launch the Run application .

B2: Enter RegEdit and click OK. Registry Editor will open.

B3: In Registry Editor , you can navigate by clicking the arrow icon next to the name of a folder. Please navigate to the following path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM ControlSet001 ControlClass {4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} 0000

B4: Double-click MD_EnableBrightnesslf2. Change Value to 0 and repeat the same thing with KMD_EnableBrightnessInterface2.

B5: Next, we will navigate to another path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Control Class {4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} 0001

B6: Double-click MD_EnableBrightnesslf2 and change the Value to 0 . Do the same with KMD_EnableBrightnessInterface2.

B7: Close Registry Editor and restart the computer.

Hopefully one of these methods helped you to fix brightness adjustment issue on Windows 10.

Good luck!
