4 ways to take screenshots of computers, laptops, no need to install software

Taking a screenshot of your computer is one of the fastest ways to record screen content such as web page content and error messages. With 3 ways to take screenshots of computers and laptops below, you can use them for many different purposes such as: capturing the entire screen, capturing a program window, capturing any part of the screen.

How to take the first screenshot for Windows 10, 8 / 8.1, take screenshots by 2, 3, applicable on all versions of Windows. If you often have to take a screenshot of your laptop, your computer should always read method 3, I also use this method very often.

1. Autosave computer screen capture (fast)

Many of you do not know that Windows 8 / 8.1 and Windows 10 can take a screenshot of your PC and save it to a folder on your computer without using intermediate photo editing applications.

To take a full screen shot of your computer, do the following:

  • Press Windows key + PrtSc (Print Screen), if the prtsc key stands alone, there are no letters or other characters attached.
  • Press Windows + Fn + PrtSc if the Prtsc key comes with a text of a different color.

  • Press Windows + E > open the Pictures> Screenshots folder on your computer to see the screenshot of your laptop, computer just taken.

To capture an application window:

  • Click on the window to take the picture, press Windows + Alt + PrtSc
  • Open the C: Users Admin Videos Captures folder to see the screenshots

If you can’t find the PstSc key , maybe on your keyboard it has been slightly modified (depending on the manufacturer), try to find one of the following keys:

2. Capture and save the screenshot to clipboard

If you want to take a screenshot but don’t want to save it to your computer’s memory, just want to send it immediately or put in photo editing software to take more notes before sending, then try taking screenshots but save to clipboard below:

  • Press PrtSc to capture full screen.
  • Click on the window to capture, press Alt + PrtSc to capture a window on the screen.
  • Press Windows + Shift + S , and then drag to capture part of the screen.

The captured image is saved to the clipboard, you just need to press Ctrl + V to paste in chat boxes, comments, Word, or into photo editing applications, such as Paint (I will direct detailed instructions below) to add a note or bookmark the image.

3. How to take a screenshot with the Snipping Tool (very good)

Snipping Tool is also a built-in tool on all versions of Windows and taking screenshots of your computer with the Snipping Tool is extremely wonderful and handy. If you use Windows but you do not know it, it is a big shortcoming.

Step 1 : Open the Snipping Tool

  • For Windows 7, Windows 10: You go to Start >> Accessories >> Snipping Tool

  • On Windows 8 / 8.1, hover in the upper right corner, click on the search icon, type Snipping and click on Snipping Tool in the results.

Step 2 : At the interface of Snipping Tool , click the arrow to the right of the word New, you will see 4 options to take a screenshot of your computer:

  • Free-form Snip: Freehand, the border is the line you circle on the screen
  • Rectangular Snip: Take a picture into a rectangular frame
  • Window Snip: Capture an open window
  • Full-screen Snip: Capture full screen

Choose a suitable shooting style, with the first 2 shots you need to localize the screen you want to capture, click to start and release the mouse when finished. The Snipping Tool window will appear after you have finished taking a screenshot, if you want to highlight a part of the photo, click the pen icon in the toolbar and then localize it.

Like method 2, the Snipping Tool will save the image to the clipboard, you can Ctrl + V to paste the image into Photoshop, Paint for further editing (I will guide below), paste it into a chat application like Viber, Facebook Messenger, Zalo web to send to friends or Ctrl + S to save photos to the folder you want on your computer.

If you often have to take screenshots, you should pin the Snipping Tool on the taskbar, with only 2 clicks you can capture the area of the screen you want as well as save it and send it to your friends. To pin the Snipping Tool, open the Snipping Tool, right-click on the Snipping Tool icon on the Taskbar and select Pin to taskbar and you’re done.

4. Capture screenshots and take quick notes with Snip & Sketch

Besides Paint, Snipping Tool, Windows 10 also has an extremely good screen capture tool called Snip & Sketch. You can open Snip & Sketch using two different methods.

Open Snip & Sketch with the PrtScn button

Windows 10 allows users to quickly activate the Snip & Sketch screen capture tool with the PrtScn button. Here’s how to do it:

  • Press the Windows + I key combination to open Settings
  • Find and click Ease of Access
  • Scroll down to find and click Keyboard in the left bar
  • Scroll down to find and then turn the switch at Print Screen shortcut to On

After the installation is complete, each time you press the PrtScn button, the Snip & Sketch screen capture tool will be activated.

Open Snip & Sketch with Start menu

Here’s how to open Snip & Sketch is quite basic. Follow these steps:

  • Press Windows to open the Start menu
  • Import Snip & Sketch
  • Click on the first result in the search results box to open the Snip & Sketch tool

Snip & Sketch is quite versatile tool. It allows you to take screenshots in full screen format, capture rectangular tiles, capture custom tiles with freeform shapes, capture application windows. Once captured, Snip & Sketch gives users editing options such as cropping, zooming.

You can also highlight objects in an image, make notes with handwriting, ballpoint pen, pencil or erase … photos just taken with Snip & Sketch.

5. Make notes on screenshots with Paint

Of the 4 ways to take screenshots above, there is only one way to capture the screen while editing, cropping or writing text on the photos. Therefore, you need to add another photo editing tool to do this. Below, I will guide you how to take a screenshot and edit with Paint (an application available on the computer), this way applies to all versions of Windows from Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8 /8.1 to Windows 10.

You take a screenshot in the way 2 or 3 above, here I press the Print Screen key ( This button is usually located in the upper right corner of the computer keyboard with many different abbreviations such as: “PrtScn”, “Prnt Scrn “,” Print Scr “… )

Open Paint by typing Paint in the search bar:

If you only want to take a part of the screen just captured, click Select, make a selection on the photo by clicking and dragging, then click the crop tool, the steps are as below:

To insert text into the picture, you click on the letter A, then place your mouse on the position where you want to write text on the image, choose the font style, font size, font color, write text and then remove the mouse from the frame.

Finally, you press CTRL + S to save the image.
